BOGC’s Takes: WHEN THE TEACHER GETS TAUGHT
Have you ever wondered who teaches the teacher? Back in 2009 while working as a teacher at a basic school, instructing Children in Natural Science, I ensured I was abreast with issues pertaining the topics I teach. On one occasion while discussing sources of water, a child quizzed, sir why do the water sellers never fill their containers (only a few will understand) to the brim? A child in basic 3 asking me this question caught me off guard. I knew not the responds, could not check the internet at that moment because there wasn’t enough time and my phone wasn’t thus far sophisticated. Just when I was about to give an erroneous answer, Vic came to the rescue; her answer, to prevent an explosion due to expansion. I wondered the form of expansion. Although I doubted, at least I was ‘saved by the bell’. In most instances as instructors we are perceived as ‘know it all’ by our students. Though it may not necessarily be a bad thing, living in that illusion is where the red flag starts. You need to understand we are not encyclopedias neither are we libraries but as teachers we are there to ensure you are guided so you do not go astray as a learner. Teachers need to also be taught or to save my head, to learn: and a place where learning typically occurs is the classroom or from the people they teach. Can you teach a teacher?
