BOGC’s Takes : Crying Wolf

 


Growing up in the streets of Nii Boi Town a suburb of Accra, I was told a story about a child. To summarize: There was this child that went to a forest alone most often to gather stuff for home. This forest was known for constant wolf attacks and hence children were advised to avoid entering the bushes alone. This child however was kind of bold than usual. He went to the forest alone very often. The good news was it was circulated in the locality that when there is an unexpected wolf attack, one is expected to just shout for help. The word: ‘wolf’ ‘wolf’!! 

On a faithful day the boy went to the forest alone and after a while the townsfolk heard ‘wolf’ ‘wolf’ as usual, the townsfolk gathered some weapons and headed towards the direction of the sound. To their surprise, there was no ‘wolf’. The boy was seen in a playful mood laughing uncontrollably.


On another faithful day, he went to the forest alone and shouted ‘wolf’ ‘wolf’. The townsfolk gathered all that was available to defeat the wolf and headed towards the forest. To their dismay there was no wolf, uncontrollably laughing again the boy was seen.


 On another faithful day or should I say unfaithful  day, he headed to the forest alone. After about three hours, the cry came again ‘wolf’ ‘wolf’. The townsfolk gathered all that was available and just before they were about to head to the forest, a man recounted and told the townsfolk the voice sounded familiar. It was the boy that has deceived them on two occasions. They thence went back to their duties knowing for sure it was a prank. Unfortunately, this time it wasn’t; a werewolf. The boy struggled with the wolf, he shouted again wolf, wolf and kept struggling with the animal. Unfortunately, it was stronger. It gave it some bites and left him lying down weak.


Later in the day, the boy’s parent reported their child missing. The man spoke of the ‘wolf’ cry but mentioned previous encounters. A search party was dispatched and into the forest they went.


After a while they saw him breathing heavily. He has been severely attacked. His body was carried to the town but he died before they could reach the nearest physician. 


How often do you cry wolf?

BOGC’s Takes: The Way of Life, What my Family didn’t teach me

As far as I can remember, we can lay hold of three families, Our patrilineal family, matrilineal family and in my case my Christian family: specifically my church. These families are to ensure our life reaches a height they consider suitable especially for us. They ensure we are adequately socialized to be able to cope with whatever life throws at us. Their education made me understand that: 1) In any instance alcohol was not good for me. 2) By keeping me hungry, I was supposed to get up and find something doing for myself. 3) By taking something which is not mine, I open the door for the enemy to have a way in my life. 4) You can love someone wholeheartedly and it will still not be reciprocated.  5) By telling lies, there are consequences and it usually lead to more lies.
